Martin Roller’s Magical Mash-ups

Martin Roller's strange yet amusing hybrid objects

Martin Roller: We love this selection of twisted yet intriguing hybrid objects by German artist Martin Roller, who hijacks everyday items to create fun mash-ups including some improbable and delirious compositions between a tyre and a birthday cake, a banana and laces or a shoe and various cold cuts. Shot with a polished, commercial aesthetic, the mash-ups are instantly appealing. But beyond their eye-catching qualities, the compositions speak to the malleable properties of identity. Sure, you’re a banana one day, but who says you have to be a fruit all your life? In Martin Roller’s imagination, a banana can easily become a shoe and that’s what is so great about art in general – it has the power to transform and transcend. Perhaps the most impressive part about Roller’s images, however, are the fact that they are not digitally created. In fact, Martin Roller blends each object together by hand, meaning that the objects do exist in real life and because digital technology is so pervasive and accessible, Roller challenges himself by using real-life sources to make his collages. Fantastic work! 🙂

Coco de Mer’s ‘X’ – Video of the Day

Coco de Mer invites us into an erotic realm; mixing wonder, danger and sex.

Coco de Mer: Under The Skin writer Walter Campbell and legendary photographer Rankin have paired up for X, a short film about sex that’s something of a sensory overload, made in partnership with underwear and sex toy brand Coco De Mer. Using a combination of found footage, seductive acting and an at times brutal soundtrack, X invites you into an otherworldly erotic realm; mixing danger, violence and sex. “The film embraces the sense of the ambient mind and what it might be inspired by, the transgression from banality into wonder”, says Campbell. “More and more I feel we enter the hinterlands of that dream state simply because the mind seeks something wilder, that unpredictable thing, the surprise moment. The film speaks about the morphing of these possibilities, and evokes Coco de Mer’s evolution of erotic thought. Coco de Mer embodies those wonderful flights of imagination that steer the mind to more extraordinary, more vital energies, and this campaign is an exciting platform for the brand to open up the erotic conversation even further.” It’s contemporary, erotic and a lil bit naughty, check it out – LOVE! Barracuda – Product of the Day

Barracuda is the carry-on roller bag with a clever collapsible design

Barracuda: We are obsessed with the Barracuda which is a uniquely designed carry-on bag that is equipped with connectivity features as well as a clever collapsible structure. The Barracuda includes a USB charger, GPS capability (for locating the bag), plus an integrated laptop tray and while looking like a typical hardshell roller bag, it collapses flat for storage in just a few seconds. The San Francisco-based brand is currently raising funds via a Kickstarter campaign with the bag expected to ship in November 2015. Amazing idea!

Catstacam – Yes, it’s a thing!

'Catstacam' lets you discover & follow the secret life of your cat on Instagram

Catstacam: From our ‘WTF, is this really happening?’ file, comes the newest thing in feline chic – ‘Catstacam’. ‘Catstacam’ is a new kind of wearable camera for cats, which can automatically upload photographs from the secret life of your cat to a dedicated Instagram account. This interesting gadget designed by Whiskas in Australia will take pictures and happily post them on Instagram as soon as it is within range of your wi-fi network. Whiskas explained the ‘Catstacam’ on their Facebook page “Have you ever wondered what your cat was trying to tell you with some of their actions? WHISKAS® CATSTACAM™ is our brand new program designed to help cat lovers better understand cats by giving a glimpse into their world. The custom WHISKAS CATSTACAM devices let selected cats take photos and post them directly to their own Instagram accounts. At the moment we only have a limited number of devices available (that’s why they’re not available for purchase) so to share our cat insights we have chosen key cat lovers that will help us spread the word – and show-off their furry friends’ intriguing behaviour. To follow them, and see what adventures they get up to, simply search #‎Catstacam on Instagram. But we don’t just want to show you what cats get up to, we want to provide a deeper understanding of common cat behaviour. So if you see anything you’re curious about, or the behaviour shown is similar to your cat’s, just ask a question and hashtag #‎AskWhiskas‬ and our cat behavioural expert will respond, telling you what it means. WHISKAS CATSTACAM is the social way to help you better understand cats.” Hmmm look, while we’re not really cat people, more power to those who really want to know what their cat does when left to their own devices and we applaud Whiskas for coming up with such a unique marketing idea. Clearly, it’s catching on or we wouldn’t be talking about it. Enjoy feline lovers…meow!

Apple Watch & New MacBook

Apple products continue to innovate and impress

Apple: A further and more in-depth look into the new Apple Watch and the new MacBook were announced at a live Apple event in San Francisco, California. So awesome!! And although the Apple Watch is clearly the most exciting new kid on the block, it is definitely the new MacBook that is the talk of the town. Apple’s new MacBook now becomes the thinnest notebook ever at just 13.1mm at its thickest point and a weight of just under a 1kg (907 grams). The newly designed Apple MacBook runs silently with a fanless logic board that is 67% smaller than the 11-inch MacBook Air. The batteries themselves have been redesigned as well, allowing them to be built with a contoured design to maximise the available space. The result provides enough power for all-day battery life, according to Apple. One major change is that the Apple MacBook features just one single USB-C port that will be used for multiple purposes including charging, video output, and USB data transfer. USB-C also has a reversible design, eliminating frustration when trying to orient a USB cable correctly. The new notebook is available in space grey, silver, and gold tones, and in two different versions. One version starts at $1,299 (USD) with a 1.1GHz Intel Core M processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of flash storage. The $1,599 version (USD) has a 1.2GHz processor, 8GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. Both versions of the new MacBook will be available in the United States beginning 10th April, 2015. The Apple Watch is Apple’s first wearable device that will be launched on 24th April, 2015. The Apple Watch collection features highly polished stainless steel and space black stainless steel cases. The display is protected by sapphire crystal. And there’s a choice of three different leather bands, a link bracelet, a Milanese loop, and a band made from high-performance fluoroelastomer. Siri is also integrated allowing users to experience the familiarity of features found on other Apple devices such as navigation, keeping track of events, and messaging friends. Take a look at both the Apple Watch and the new MacBook below:

‘Boo-Boos’ – Are these Band-Aids too Realistic?

'Boo-Boos' depict sickening & repulsive injuries yet they're so much fun!

If you enjoy others feeling sorry for you with every little cut or graze, then Boo-Boos are probably for you. Boo-Boos are just like the band-aids you already use only hyper-realistic – allowing you to transform the smallest cut into a gunshot wound, chemical burn, or skin ulcer. An offbeat project currently being funded on Kickstarter, Boo-Boos make your cuts & scrapes look so much worse than they really are. While the injuries depicted on these bandages are somewhat sickening and repulsive, they are also just a bit of fun. So go ahead and slap them on and watch people gasp and gag at your laceration, burn, or infection. So gross!

Boo-Boos 1

So what’s the story? $hërwøõd Förlêé, inventor of the Anti-Theft Lunch Bags, came up with the idea for Boo-Boos after witnessing an accident that involved a bit too much blood for his liking. A visit to the ER revealed that the injury was thankfully (but disappointingly given the look of it) not very serious. A couple of stitches later and all was good again. $hërwøõd maintains, however, that at the time, the injury was life-threatening, and I’m sure that many of you can relate to this sentiment after receiving nicks of your own. Now, with Boo-Boos, you can finally convince people of the gravity of your wound while keeping the truth under wraps. A variety of injuries are depicted on the bandages including:

Boo-Boos 2

The bandages, despite how they look, are sterile, latex-free, and individually wrapped so you can guarantee your boo-boos won’t turn into Boo-Boos. All bandages measure 3″ × 0.75″ (76mm × 19mm). Boo-Boos aren’t for everyone, especially those with weak stomachs, but you have to admit, they’re definitely more interesting than any of the other Band-Aids on the market. If you don’t mind a bit of attention, enjoy having a bit of a laugh, or you wish to convey pain in a conceivable visual manner, then Boo-Boos are definitely for you!

Coffee: Six Degrees of Caffeination

New York City’s love affair with the perfect cup of coffee

Coffee crazies: “Some people use coffee as a drug, and some people use it as a joy,” says filmmaker and Swallow Magazine founder James Casey. “I went from being the former – needing it when I was tired or as a digestif – to learning that, more than just a beverage, it’s a culture.” Casey’s rousing film captures the frenetic pace of caffeinated New York, featuring a cast of obsessives like Jesse Kahn of roasters and educators Counter Culture, and Oliver Strand, the pre-eminent New York Times coffee writer, as well as more casual sippers such as Nancy Whang, formerly of LCD Soundsystem, and Mission Chinese Food’s Angela Dimayuga. Coffee cultivation first took place in Southern Arabia; the earliest credible evidence of coffee-drinking appears in the middle of the 15th century in the Sufi shrines of Yemen. In the Horn of Africa and Yemen, coffee was used in local religious ceremonies. Coffee plants are cultivated in over 70 countries, primarily in the equatorial regions of the Americas, Southeast Asia, India and Africa. The two most commonly grown are the highly regarded arabica, and the less sophisticated but stronger and more hardy robusta. “Coffee culture was far more prevalent in places like San Francisco, and there’s no defining aspect to coffee in New York because it is so broad,” explains Casey. “There’s everything from Scandinavian-style coffee in parts of Brooklyn to a prevalence for blue collar, dark roasted Italian coffee. I also learned that it is not just about taste, but that there’s a qualitative aspect with regards to the ethical question of coffee, fair trade, and what you are willing to support.” While I love great coffee, I have been known to settle for rubbish just to get a hIt of the black magic – I can not even contemplate my day until I’ve had a cup of coffee and I wouldn’t be giving it up for anything or anyone. Life is just way too short.
